Critic reviews

‘Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!’ (Sir Ian McKellen)
‘There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny and up for anything. He is a kind man… compassionate and sensitive…. but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself’ (Whoopi Goldberg)
‘I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world – all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart’

(Michael Chabon)
‘What a glorious memoir Sir Patrick Stewart has written. His prose is elegant and beautiful, diamond-like in its clarity and precision, and his recollections of his life are full of tenderness, insight, candour and pathos. If he hadn't been so busy all these years being a great actor, delighting us all, he could have been a great writer, and now with this book, he is one’ (Jonathan Ames)

The Measure of a Man

I was so looking forward to this memoir and my expectations were surpassed. Stewart really is an extraordinary man, a great actor, and a fascinating raconteur. And, as a lifelong Star Trek fan, I hoovered up so much Trek lore that was new to me.

As exquisite as the man himself!

Patrick Stewart here cuts himself open and shows us his vulnerability, his mistakes and triumphs, his joys and sorrows.
As a Yorkshire lass, I’m gratified to see that our well known grit and spines of steel are as apparent in Sir Patrick now as they ever were.
His intimate relationship with narrative and communication is put to perfect use as he takes us through his life, making no apologies for the reality he experienced and the choices he made, even as he acknowledges where he may have been the villain of the piece.

Delectably done, Sir.

Definitely Worth the Wait!

Patrick Stewart has been one of the worlds leading actors for decades and now gives us a fantastic book providing an insight into his life and career (with many anecdotes and funny stories of events, encounters and his working alongside other great actors and actresses). With honest reflections on the good and not so good, he's not shy in coming forward and sharing with us the highs and lows of his life and time on stage and screen. Shakespeare has been an important focal point of this career, and he picks up on how this has influenced him and his acting over the decades, but then his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company led him to other great work such as his role as the power hungry Sejanus in the BBC's classic 1970's 'I, Claudius' and then across the Atlantic to work in theatre, TV and film - to his days as Jean-Luc Picard and then as Professor Xavier.

This wide-ranging and entertaining book is narrated in a style by an actor whose unmistakable voice is known by many millions around the world. Fans have been waiting a long time for this - so all I can say is savour and enjoy.....

Thanks Patrick - you're a star!

not bad for a Mirfield lad

loved it from his description of early life, many places I know personally, to the end with passages from Dickens and Shakespeare, I was so eager to keep listening I missed cricket World Cup matches ( not England' s matches )

Excellent listen beautifully narrated by the Sir himself

Really enjoyed the audiobook, fascinating to hear about his past and present. Saw him at the old vic theatre. I’m glad in my life to have seen the man performing his art.
