I’ve read every Bosch, Ballard and Haller and this new character, Stillwell (who I believe appeared in The Fifth Witness), was just okay. The story was just okay.
I was waiting for something to happen but it just never managed to keep me invested.
I’m hoping that Connelly was focussing more on the Haller book due to release in October!
Regardless, I’ll never not be a fan.

After reading many books by this author I found this one pretty ordinary and in fact towards the end boring.

New likeable character.

I had hoped for better on this considering I either read or listened to every book that Michael has written and they were all great, Even Jack McEvoy (annoying little whiner). Thinking this was set on Catalina island I thought for sure that there would be some mention of Terry McCaleb or his wife Gracie (Bloodwork, A Darkness More than Night and The Narrows). There wasn't even a connection to Bosch or Ballard. The story was slow and confusing. The narrator was just fine except I hate it when men attempt to use put on voices to mimic a women's by lowering their own. I wish they would simply speak normal.

Loved the detail about Catalina Island, I also enjoyed the character of Stillwell, a more measured character than Bosch but with same sense of justice. Hopefully we see the character develop in time.
