Summary

The Devil Rides Out

Many consider it to be Dennis Wheatley's finest work, which is praise indeed for this world beating novelist. It was a huge best seller in the 1930s when it first came out, full of 1930s atmosphere, skilfully written and well researched, too - although Wheatley never practiced magic himself, he met with many of the most famous occultists of his day to make the book as authentic as possible.

In The Devil Rides Out, the Duke de Richleau and a friend find that one of their number is missing from a reunion, and it turns out that he has fallen under the influence of a black magic sect. Disbelieving at first, the Duke and his friends soon discover that magic and the powers of darkness are still alive and very real, as they fight a series of terrific earthly and occult battles to save their friend's soul.

The book was filmed in the 1960s, with Christopher Lee taking the lead role as the Duke, and he he is back in splendid form as he narrates for your listening pleasure.

great reading

having watched the hammer film I thought I would give the book a go. Whilst abridged the reading by Sir Christopher Lee was mesmeric. the story is more indepth than the film , I have already purchased the other in the series read by SCL.

Masterful

Superb narration by the sadly departed Lee who imbues the text with wonderful characterisation from start to finish which draws the listener in totally. A masterful rendition of Wheatley's incredibly well-researched story which engages throughout with its dramatic ebb and flow. Absolutely loved it.

Superb narration by Sir Christopher Lee

Great story rattling along at a decent pace. Narrated by what must surely be the best possible choice of actor, Sir Christopher Lee, who played the Duc de Richleau in the 1968 film of the book. Truly excellent choice - well played, Audible.

Read by the late exceptional Christopher Lee

Really enjoyed this yarn, brought to life by the inimitable Christopher Lee. Now I’ll have to watch the film…pretty sure he’s in it too!

Masterful reading of classic satanism

As a life long Hammer film man the Devil Rides Out movie is one of Hammers best and one of Christopher Lee's great performances. So intrigued to hear "what was left out" as is the norm with book to movie adaptations. Hammer did a marvellous job capturing a huge portion of the book and the spirit intended. Christopher Lee is perfect for the audible reading and surprises with excellent characterisations. Overall fantastic book and well worth any horror fans time.
