Summary
The Keep is the first book in the Adversary Cycle from best-selling author F. Paul Wilson
"Something is murdering my men."
Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims.
When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way - a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny.
The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other...the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened.

Riveting story, far superior to the film
I’ve been fascinated by the film The Keep for a long time, and even more so by the story of its production issues, Michael Mann’s dissatisfaction, and the fabled 3.5 hour cut (apparently lost). That led me to the audiobook, which did not disappoint. I can revisit the film now with added knowledge to further enhance the viewing.

Exciting premise and strong characters, weak finish
Very strong opening, exciting premise and very strong characters. The performance is incredible and carries a huge part of my final score.
The story took some turns I did not enjoy and finished on what was to me the most predictable and boring note I could have imagined, but the overall experience is still strong.

Man writing woman doesn't stand the test of time
I've loved this book since I first read it in the mid 80s. I re-read it a couple of times after that, but the last time was almost 30 years ago.
While the basic story (Nazis, the undead, good versus evil) holds up well, Wilson's characterisation of Magda sounds cringy to modern ears.
Don't get me wrong, I'd still recommend this book, but just bear in mind that the female character is wholly one dimensional.

Toast of London in Romania!
Fantastic book read really well. Every time the reader voices ‘Glen’ I can’t help thinking that he sounds just like Matt Berry. Always makes me smile - especially as Matt Berry plays a vampire In What We Do in the Shadows.

Among the greatest Epic Horror stories ever
Its slow to get into the Depth of the story, the first half is a little struggle but it picks up half way. The latter part is very intriguing, thought provoking and exciting. Its a truly epic tale!!

Better than I had expected
I downloaded this book because I had watched the 80's movie when I was a teen and always thought it seemed like a cool idea that was very badly executed on film. Upon finding out there was an audiobook available, I thought I would give it a chance. I didn't regret it.
The book is far more intelligent, nuanced and interesting than the failed movie. The characters are very well fleshed out, the plot is engaging and never really lets you feel like you've figured everything completely out until it all comes together at the end. The book effortlessly mixes fantasy with the real horrors of the brutal fascism of WW2 and comes out with a compelling and enjoyable story.
I have already downloaded the next in the series and will probably check out some of the writers other works.
Lister does a solid job as narrator with a good mix of accents for all the characters.

I loved it!
I decided to purchase The Keep out of curiosity, as I’ve seen the film multiple times. The film is a strange one as it pulls you in with its imagery and wonderful atmosphere, but the story doesn’t seem to amount to much. It has always felt like something was missing. Now after reading the book, I know what that is!
The book kept me interested and wanting more. Although the Vampire, Molasar, is a great character, it’s actually more tense and interesting when he is in the background, slowly picking off the German soldiers, and just a mysterious presence.
The actor who narrates the story does a wonderful job. He really brings each person to life, and adds drama to the already intriguing story.
I listen to audiobooks when I walk the dog. I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next, so the dog was happy with my choice!

Highly Enjoyable.........and creepy
I couldn't get enough of this book. The narrator does an excellent job and kept me hooked from start to finish. At various times throughout my hair was standing on end at the levels of creepiness peppered throughout the story. Thumbs up from me and I've added the second book to my wish list.
