About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
'The women in this family, we're different....'
Blythe Connor doesn't want history to repeat itself.
Violet is her first child and she will give her daughter all the love she deserves. All the love that her own mother withheld.
But firstborns are never easy. And Violet is demanding and fretful. She never smiles. Soon Blythe believes she can do no right - that something's very wrong. Either with her daughter, or herself.
Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining it. But Violet's different with him. And he can't understand what Blythe suffered as a child. No one can.
Blythe wants to be a good mother. But what if that's not enough for Violet? Or her marriage? What if she can't see the darkness coming?
Mother and daughter. Angel or monster?
We don't get to choose our inheritance - or who we are....
The Push is an addictive, gripping and compulsive listen that asks what happens when women are not believed - and what if motherhood isn't everything you hoped for but everything you always feared?

*Intense & Dark*
This story is about 3 generations of Mothers.
Etta - Mother to Cecilia
She is where it all began, she found happiness at a young age with Louis who was destined to be a doctor but her father had other ideas. Sadly tragedy strikes.
Cecilia - Mother to Blythe
Bore the brunt of what it’s like to never feel wanted by her own mother when tragedy strikes
Blythe - Mother to Violet
She grew up with the same coldness for a mother and when she becomes pregnant she is hopeful that things will change, then tragedy strikes
Each mother experiences tragedy and cruelty and in the case of Etta & Cecelia it seems they had nothing to give and nothing was dealt with, re their emotions etc, Blythe on the other hand has help but seemingly wanted to hang onto her feelings.
Blythe is the narrator of this book and it feels intense and she flips backwards and forwards to the other mothers that make up her line. What we then have to wonder is her own relationship with her daughter Violet is a product of her upbringing or is it something that will haunt her family line. Also how culpable is her husband who seems to feel Violet can do no wrong….
This is a promising debut for Ashley Audrain

Fabulous
Loved this wonderfully evocative story of motherhood. One of my favourites of 2021. Reminded me in parts of We Need To Talk About Kevin

Thought provoking insight into motherhood
I liked the audio recording very much and thought the reader did a great job. The book jumps from different time periods so when listening, it takes a moment to adjust to the time period; I feel this would be easier if reading the book. I really liked The character of Blythe and her journey. The ending was a bit predictable but overall I would recommend this book.

Had me gripped!
Listened to this in 3 days as I was hooked.
Sinister story about a mother and daughter relationship. It had me wondering about the main character right up to the last sentence.

So raw and so sad
This left me feeling so much quiet pain and weirdly also validated my feelings as a mother. It was almost too much. I couldn’t stop listening so whizzed through it very quickly. I’ll definitely be looking for more from Ashley Audrain in future.

Good but not enjoyable.
Good writing, good narration but a very dark and painful read, I started really dreading coming back to it!
