About this listen

From the author of the Richard & Judy Book Club pick After the Fall comes another enthralling novel.

On a sharp winter's morning, a man turns his back on prison. This is the story of Joseph, who killed his wife, Zoe. Of their three children who witnessed the event. Of Zoe's parents, Hannah and Frederick, who are bringing up the children and can't forgive or understand Joseph. They slowly adjust to life without Zoe, until the day Joseph is released from prison...

Vvivacious story

What did you like most about The Son-In-Law?

I liked the way the story progresses and unravel in a way you would never have guessed at the start of the story.

What other book might you compare The Son-In-Law to, and why?

I categorize this book along with "Chocolat", "No child of mine" in the section of realistic urging to view certain issues from another point of view.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

They could have been the characters in the book themselves.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The complete story moved me. Especially the parts in which Scarlet tells the story.

Moving

I was pulled into this very moving story straight away easily relating to all its characters who take it in turns to narrate as it moves forward. It kept me hooked all along and often tight throated from empathy. And even if it is perhaps a little predictable the author manages to insightfully and adroitly portray the raw feelings of each of the characters and their inner conflicts. The only negative point for me was the one or two unnecessarily silly child narratives. But I certainly do reccomend it.

Sensitively written, thoroughly recommend

Fiction but could so easily be fact. Brilliantly narrated by the four listed and so sensitively written that one could believe Charity Norman has had first hand experience of the situation. Do yourself a favour and buy this book today 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Stays with you long after it's ended

Would you listen to The Son-In-Law again? Why?

Very very probably. This and "After the Fall" are both up there as some of the most memorable book

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

I wouldn't exactly call her my favourite, but Hannah the embittered mother-in-law is captured absolutely brilliantly.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I wouldn't ruin such a good book by turning it into a movie.
