About this listen

Change is afoot at Kings Lake Central police station. A most unexpected new detective inspector takes up his post this Monday morning, and the oldest detective in the place takes a momentous decision.

Around them, other officers are considering their own situations, and even the building itself seems to be facing an uncertain future. But life and death go on, nevertheless, and by lunchtime someone will make a grim discovery on the Norfolk saltmarshes. A stranger seems to have suffered a slow and agonizing death out there.

As the team from Kings Lake uncover his story, they reveal another, much older one with its origins far back in the previous century. In the tide that governs the affairs of men, it seems, love and loss, betrayal and revenge are timeless themes. Fans of Colin Dexter, P. D. James, and Ruth Rendell have all found much to enjoy in DC Smith's previous investigations.

There's a wistful feel from the very start of the book as the Detective Sargent has finally decided the time has come to retire, what with a new Inspector & all. He looks to prepare his loyal, small team of Chris Waters & Serina Butler both of whom he's been mentoring, along with friend & old hand John Murray for the post-DC era, as they work on what maybe their last big murder case together.
The body of a man is recovered from the estuary / edge of the saltmarshes; and the North Norfolk coast around Burham Overy Staithe becomes centre stage in an investigation into his murder, that brings a now reclusive late 1960's pop-star into the detectives sights.
Time & Tide is another superb police procedural, with incites into interviewing techniques and plenty of delightful dry humour from DC despite his mixed feelings about things all changing and tide & time waiting for no-one.

Starring the North Norfolk Coast!

I’ve been enjoying this series but this story was rather slow and drawn out. Did not have an unexpected twist

Interesting police procedural

I’ve listened to loads of modern day free detective audiobooks just to pass the time, and I’m usually constantly having to fast forward through the badly written soft porn sections and the unnecessary bad language. This book was such a refreshing change. I actually ended up listening to it twice. The humour and characterisations kept my interest throughout and it became a proper “listen” rather than a “passing the time” audiobook. Once I got used to the narrator, I found his voice suited the part, and there was definitely a Radio 4 Robert Robinson Points of View vibe going on here!

A pleasantly enjoyable surprise for a free with membership listen.

Not my usual type of book, but loved this. Great character in Smith and a good plot, which kept me gripped.

Fabulous character in Smith

Loved this book, as well as all in the series, so far. The narrator is perfect. The characters are just delightful.

A tale of twists and turns.

Hope this isn’t the last one in this series as I enjoyed this book very much. From book one you get inside the characters and feel you know them but ,you never do ,so keep reading.

Brilliant

I love the humour and the stories that Mr Grainger writes. Mr Jackson is a perfect narrator although the Welsh accent was a little iffy at times!

Another cracker!

As a longtime fan of the DC Smith series, I was thrilled to dive into "Time and Tide" by Peter Grainger. This seventh installment continues to showcase Grainger's masterful storytelling and character development. Smith's dry wit, sharp intellect, and compassionate nature shine through as he tackles his potentially final case before retirement. The intricate plot weaves together a present-day murder with historical elements, keeping listeners engaged throughout.

Gildart Jackson's narration once again elevates the material, bringing each character to life with distinct voices and capturing the nuances of Smith's personality perfectly. His performance adds depth and emotion to Grainger's already rich prose.

The DC Smith series would make for compelling television, with its well-drawn characters, intricate mysteries, and the picturesque Norfolk setting. Each book, including "Time and Tide," offers a perfect blend of police procedural and character study that would translate beautifully to the screen.

Great story, as always, and I usually love this narrator but the Welsh accent is bloody awful.

I know the area in which the story is set, it all comes across so well. All characters are well defined. I really enjoy the sense of fun between the main characters.
