Summary

Twenty-one years ago, Dr Richard Carter and his wife Pamela were killed in what has become the most infamous double murder of the modern age.

Their 1 0year-old daughter – nicknamed the Angel of Death – spent eight years in a children’s secure unit and is living quietly under an assumed name with a family of her own.

Now, on the anniversary of the trial, a documentary team has tracked down her older sister, compelling her to break two decades of silence.

Her explosive interview sparks national headlines and journalist Brinley Booth, a childhood friend of the Carter sisters, is tasked with covering the news story.

For the first time, the three women are forced to confront what really happened that night – with devastating consequences for them all.
When I Was Ten is the highly anticipated, stay-up-all-night next book by acclaimed crime author Fiona Cummins.

Decent entertainment

So it’s a murder story, and an abusive relationship story, and a journalist story… and somehow they all get mixed up. Engaging enough… although even I managed to see through most of the plot twists. A decent way to pass a few hours.

Good story, performance bugged me a bit

Fiona Cummins writes a great story. Really enjoyed that part, no doubt. But the narrator over-pronounced everything and put extra emphasis on her t's. And there seemed to be no change in dialect, accent, emphasis, tone or pitch.

excellent story and performance! the only thing I wasn't as keen on was the ending. I felt like there was just a little rushed but overall I really enjoyed it

Thoroughly recommended

A gripping story that I couldn’t get through quick enough. I gasped aloud to myself several times. Clever writing that threw up the unexpected throughout. Other reviews have mentioned having some difficulty determining which character was being read but i didn’t find this to be the case.

So predictable

Too predictable, unrealistic depiction of the ability of 10 and 12 year olds to make decisions and understand consequences.

A disturbing story, but I couldn’t put it down

A well written book, wonderful use of language and overall I’d definitely recommend it.
There were some chapters that I found quite harrowing, if you’ve been a victim of mental and physical cruelty as a child, be warned. It’s triggering. Despite this, I persisted in an almost ghoulish fascination to find out what happened. The narrator didn’t always make enough changes in her voice to know which character she was portraying at times, but otherwise a really good performance.

Issue with the recording

There was an issue with this recording. The very start of almost every paragraph was cut off. It - thankfully - didn’t impact too much on the story, just the ‘R’ in Richard, for example. But it *was* annoying
