About this listen
"This isn’t how I pictured my life, you know? It was going to be fabulous. I was going to be fabulous.”
Meet Charlie; unfulfilled and perimenopausal, Charlie’s suburban life is a far cry from the Manhattan glamour she once dreamed of. Her husband is incapable of talking about anything other than his latest Ironman challenge, her sex life consists of fictional encounters with Hollywood stars, her kids need constant man-management, and to make things worse, her optician has just prescribed her reading glasses.
Oh, and she can’t stop crying at TV adverts…
In the hope of re-discovering her sense of self, Charlie begins writing a list: 45 things to do before she’s 45.
- Eat an oyster
- Take up parkour
- Read War and Peace
- Take ecstasy
- Try stand-up comedy
- Go to a sex club
Determined to complete them all, Charlie embarks on a chaotic odyssey through her own spectacular midlife crisis, challenging herself to become the person she wants to be. But what happens if we’re not that person? How do we learn to let them go? Or does something else have to give?
Uproariously funny and deeply human, 45 Things… is an all-too relatable story of what it means to be alive and how much living we all still have to do.
Narrated by the inimitable Isy Suttie (Peep Show), 45 Things... is the perfect listen for fans of Dolly Alderton, Caitlin Moran and Marian Keyes.
"There is so much to relate to. I can guarantee that if you're a woman and over thirty, you'll be nodding and laughing along!” – Laura Pearson, author of The Last List of Mabel Beaumont

Nice to read about a flawed woman with humour
Good performance and the main character is both funny and honest. Reminds us all that what we think we want isn’t always best for us. Underneath it all it’s about a struggle to find yourself in middle aged motherhood

Great read
Not my usual sort of book but as it was in audible plus I gave it a go and I’m glad I did. The story was funny and being a woman of 44 I found it very relatable. The narrator was fantastic and really brought the book to life so yes I would recommend this book, particularly for ladies in their late 30’s and above

Good beginning, not sure about the ending.
I got really into it at the beginning. The ending was not what I expected and I felt a little disappointed.

Main character was annoying
I loved the beginning of this book but the main character soon started to irritate me. She was extremely self centred and selfish and it took a long time for her to rectify this, this was frustrating to read and I felt for her friends having someone like that in their friendship group. This read made me realise that I much prefer books with relatable main characters.

Good narration and interesting concept for a unlikeable main character
A few times I went to stop reading this book as the main character is unlikeable and self obsessed. However, the author doesn’t hide this and clearly wrote it well aware the main character wouldn’t be liked it and drew on that narrative. For that reason I thought the book was an interesting read - it takes confidence to write a book knowing most women will dislike the character so I thought it was brave and for that reason, a good listen!

Don’t believe the negative reviews
This book is meant to be humorous, so all those negative reviews saying the main character is self centred need to lighten up as it is not a serious book! That said, it does explore themes of midlife crises, perimenopause and navigating a new phase of life as you approach 45. It is about rediscovering yourself after realising you have changed since your twenties along with the people around you and figuring out what truly makes you happy. The story is laugh out loud funny, sometimes silly, sometimes serious and brilliantly narrated. Absolutely recommend, especially if you are in your 40s or 50s!
