Summary

Seattle spinal surgeon Dr. David Hanscom focuses on an aspect of chronic pain that the medical world has largely overlooked: you must calm your nervous system in order to get better. More than any other book about pain, Back in Control reveals how to quiet a turbocharged central nervous system and make a full recovery, with or without surgery. Dr. Hanscom shares the story of his own journey out of chronic pain and offers a treatment paradigm that has evolved from his personal experience, as well what he has learned from his patients, hundreds of whom have moved beyond managing pain to becoming pain free. This book will enable those suffering from chronic pain to regain control of their care and life.

This revised second edition reflects the last few years of neuroscience research. It is becoming increasingly clear that the brain processes mental and physical pain in a similar manner. As anxiety drops, pain will diminish. Dr. Hanscom has observed that these principles apply to any chronic pain condition.

Worth a listen...

This strategies for dealing with pain are really good, I was also pleased that I was already doing many positive things to control my pain.

I found that a previous book I listened to 'The Intelligent Body' by Kyle L Davies had already given me a lot of knowledge about the mechanisms of chronic pain, so the first section was largely redundant for me.

Written by a man for men

Dear Audible and Dr Hanscom. One of my pet peeves is when actors are employed to read non-fiction texts. It somehow renders the serious nature of the text into some sort of play. In this particular case, I have seen the author on YouTube and he seems perfectly capable of reading his own book. so why does Audible keep doing this? Who knows? This is by no means the worst example of this practice but it is certainly obvious.

The book feels like it was written by a man for men. All the books he recommends are written by rich, white, male doctors. Just like him.

There is a lot of repetition and no real depth to the advice. It is a shame because this book had a lot of potential.

The best bit of this book is when Dr Hanscom tells us that at a PTA meeting 12 of the other parents sent him notes asking him to stop talking. Ohhh that was funny. And to think he thought he was being self-deprecating by telling us.
