Summary

It was just a party. But it turned into a nightmare.

When Rachel wakes up in a strange room, the morning after a neighbour’s party, she has no memory of what happened the night before. Why did her husband leave her alone at the party? Did they row? Why are Rachel’s arms so bruised? And why are her neighbours and friends so vague about what really happened?

Little by little, Rachel pieces together the devastating events that took place in a friend’s house, at a party where she should have been safe. Everyone remembers what happened that night differently, and everyone has something to hide. But someone knows the truth about what happened to Rachel. And she’s determined to find them.

The Party is the gripping new novel from bestseller Lisa Hall.

Critic reviews

"Breathlessly fast-paced and cleverly unsettling, this thriller about a couple trying to escape their past is the very definition of unputdownable." (Heat on Tell Me No Lies)

"An uneasy creeping feeling followed me through the book - I was never quite sure who I should be trusting - I read this book in one sitting because I had to know what was going to happen next. An excellent thriller that had me hooked from the start." (Katerina Diamond, author of The Secret, on Tell Me No Lies)

"A paranoia-inducing plot that makes you question everyone! Lisa Hall’s new novel is one to get under your skin and has an ending that’ll leave you reeling." (Sam Carrington, author of Saving Sophie on Tell Me No Lies)

Not as well written as Between You and Me

I was such a fan of Between You and Me and got this pretty eagerly. It lacked a lot of the skill of storytelling from its predecessor. I found out a lot about what was happening in her throat and whether she was feeling sick, which was basically all the time - understandable of course, after experiencing that trauma, but there are still other ways of narrating how she is feeling that doesn't seem so repetitive. Overall, I liked the story and the twists and turns of it that is classic with Lisa Hall, and enjoyed hating on certain arsehole characters! But I get the sense that this was written in a rush and not so well prepared as her debut, hence the 3 stars.

An average book, poorly read.

The story itself was entertaining enough. However, the narration was terrible. Very little intonation used to convey the emotions being portrayed by the characters, and her ‘male’ voice was much like when a small child pretends to be a grown up.

Good plot but felt it needed more

I enjoyed the book. The premise of story and the narrator were really good but I felt like it was missing something in the conclusion to who done it.

Disappointed in the end

This is a story whose characters are all imperfect. But then we all are. It is also a story about how an act of violence impacts a whole community.
I felt the ending was a cop out and it would have been much more satisfactory if the author has dealt with the messiness of the aftermath rather than the get out that she uses. Rachel seems to care for her son, so why would she jeopardise his future further by becoming a murderer.
More interesting to do the trial. Likely Sean would be convicted. But then how do the characters reconcile themselves with that. How do Sean's parents cope with that? How does Rachel cope with financial ruin as well as a the trauma of the trial?

The ending also does not confirm whether Rachel kills Sean. if she tries and fails then Sean would certainly see himself as winning.

Sean himself is a sex offender. It would not be a one off event. At his age he may well have committed other offences, even if undetected.

Poor Narration ‘surprisingly’

Georgia Maguire is one of my favourites narrators but her performance in this book was poor. She ran one chapter into another too quickly, not allowing for a change in scene.

straight into the story and kept me intrigued

I guessed early on who the 'culprit' was but it was still a good listen. I was annoyed that obvious questions weren't asked, she didn't probe her husband at all and only asked a few questions of her friends. Also who wakes up and doesn't search for their phone after a drunk night out, especially when you lose all your photos etc. All that aside, I enjoyed the story and towards the end wanted to get back to the book as quick as I could to find out what happened.

Skipped most of it as so terrible

As if it were written by a child. Shockingly shallow in all aspects. I guessed the culprit and motive within about the first 20 minutes and then literally couldn’t bear to listen to any more of the painting by numbers prose. Absolutely dialled in.
