A year later, she was the guitarist in the hugely influential all-girl band the Slits, who fearlessly took on the male-dominated music scene and became part of a movement that changed music. A raw, thrilling story of life on the frontiers and a candid account of Viv's life post-punk - taking in a career in film, the pain of IVF, illness and divorce and the triumph of making music again - Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys. is a remarkable memoir.

Story
With an introduction by the Man Booker Prize-winning author of A Brief History of Seven Killings, Marlon James. Oreo has been raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note. Oreo’s quest is to find her father and discover the secret of her birth. What ensues in Fran Ross' opus is a playful, modernised parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in '70s pop culture and mixing standard English, black vernacular and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb.

Usually, this is where we'd tell you what this book is about. But with Chris Cleave, it's a bit different. Because if you've read The Other Hand or Incendiary, you'll know that what his books are about is only part of the story - what really matters is how they make you feel. Gold is about the limits of human endurance, both physical and emotional. It will make you cry. Gold is about what drives us to succeed - and what we choose to sacrifice for success. It will make you feel glad to be alive.

Beard asks bigger questions: What power did emperors actually have? Was the Roman palace really so bloodstained? Story
This is the tale of Demon Copperhead: our hero. A boy with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-coloured hair, bucket-loads of charm and a talent or two the world is yet to discover. Born to a teenaged single mother in a single wide trailer, life is not set fair for Demon as he escorts us on this, his journey through the modern perils of foster care, athletic success and addiction, the dizzying highs of true love, and the crushing losses that can accompany it.

I look forward to these and even listen again. I love hearing from the authors and Sara and Alex. The podcast has inspired many books to be added to my TBR pile.
I don't like the book clubbers. They come across as reluctant readers and fusty. I tune out their comments. I wonder if you might ask more well-rounded readers to take part?
